INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CAREERS
20 weeks Credit: ½ Unit

    • Explore a variety of health and medical careers
    • Online research, class activities, guest speakers, and field experiences
    • Instill a sense of professionalism
    • Acquire practical skills such as blood pressure monitoring
    • Certification in American Heart Association Basic First Aid and CPR for

the Health Care Professional (based upon written and practical testing)

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY & ETHICS
20 weeks Credit: ½ Unit

  • Introduction to the terminology of specific body systems, common disorders, and newest treatment options available.
  • Study the legal and ethical issues in health care by exploring current events and landmark cases.
  • Online research, class debates, field trips and expert guests in medicine and law.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
40 weeks Credit: 1 Unit

  • An advanced science course that is a discussion and lab based study of the human body.
  • Anatomical terminology, anatomical identification, and physiological processes of the human body.
  • This course requires an extensive amount of time, effort, reading, and memorization.

JOB SHADOWING EXPERIENCE
20 weeks Credit: ½ Unit

  • Students will learn college success skills (time management, learning styles, study skills) and professional skills (resume writing, interview skills, portfolio building) to strengthen their abilities and prepare them for a future in the health care fields.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
40 weeks Credit: 1 Unit

  • Possible certification as a New York State Emergency Medical Technician
  • Field trips, observations, and guest speakers dealing in allied medical professions.
  • During the course students are required to complete:
    • American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider
    • Federal Emergency Management System course:
      • Introduction to Incident Command System(ICS-100)
      • National Incident Management System Introduction (IS-700)
    • Five hours each of observation on an ambulance and in an emergency medical facility.
  • The opportunity to earn eight hours of college elective credit if they complete all course requirements.
  • Promotes volunteerism through membership with local volunteer fire departments and emergency squads.
